How to choose a transistor.
I receive one or two E-mails from a watcher of my homepage on one day. The frequently question is as follows. " Please teach me the British or American transistor changeable from the Japanese transistors informed on my homepage!" But I do not have a data book of England and America. I will teach you how to choose the transistor by yourself. Before you read this page, please get a data book of transistor made by maker. This page describes how to choose a transistor in very amateurish way. It is not so correct. But it is easy to understand.
1.Reference.
Reference means " the transistor maker manufactures and deals the transistor mainly for that usage". This is most important information. If you want to make 50MHz transmitter, you must choose the UHF transistor. You can not use the switching transistor for the transmitter. The reference of 2SC1815 is " low frequency amplification" . Therefore it is good for sound frequency amplifier.
2.Maximum value of the corrector dissipation .Pc.
Pc means " how many energy the transistor can deals". In order to use transistor safety from the break, you must choose 4 times bigger Pc of transistor from the output power of the amplifier. For example , 2SC1815 has it's Pc of 400mW. Therefore it can output 100mW maximum power output. The bigger Pc you choose, the more safety the project becomes. But it is not cost-effective to use too many Pc of transistor. Of course , the power transistor can be used with enough size of heat sink. Without heat sink the power transistor can be broken easily.
3.Vceo maens " maximum value of emitter grounding of voltage which can applied between the collector and the emitter". You must choose the transistor twice as big of Vceo than the voltage of the poer supply. Foe example 2SC1815 has 50 volts of Vceo. Therefore it can be used 25 volts or less as the Vcc of the circuit. Some new UHF transistor made for handy telephone has low Vceo. It is broken easy with 12V of Vcc. Be care!
4.Transient frequency. ft.
The transient frequency means " limit of the frequency of the transistor ". But on the transient frequency the transistor has no gain. Therefore , in order to get enough gain, you must choose the transistor ten times bigger of "ft" than the frequency you must deal ( amplify or oscillate ) on the circuit. For example 2SC1815 has 80Mhz of it's ft. Therefore it can be used on the audio frequency and Hf frequency lower than 8MHz. But ft changes with it's collector current. With enough current , the ft of 2SC1815 becomes 500MHz. Therefore it can be used on 50MHz.
The data book informs you many another characteristics of the transistor. But you can choose the transistor with that four characteristics as an amateur .
